Thanks to the initiative of local boutique Calyx, Monday evening was set alight with swirls and twirls of top fashion in the intimate setting of Wicker Woods Restaurant in Walmer.
Port Elizabeth fashionistas were treated to the showing of the Spring/Summer 2011/2012 collections of some our country’s top designers as seen at the recent South African Fashion Week in Sandton, Johannesburg.
One of the highlights of the scintillating evening was definitely a talk by internationally renowned Durban-based designer Terrence Bray (pictured on the left with Calyx owner Maryna in front of Wicker Woods) on the trends for spring/summer 2011.
Hot-of-the-press news about Terrence is that he has been asked by the future Princess of Monaco – Charlene Wittstock – to design her wedding dress for the couple’s Durban ceremony!
Giorgio Armani is designing her Monaco wedding dress, but Charlene has asked Terrence to be present at the fitting, as well as to design her mother’s and the bridesmaids’ dresses.
The North Storm Concept Store in New York has also asked Terrence for some of his latest designs which include an unisex under- and swimwear collection. Watch this space…
TERRENCE BRAY’S SPRING/SUMMER TRENDS
“A simple outfit can come alive with the bold use of colour and brave confidence,” says Terrence. “It’s all about challenging colour codes – why not put turquoise and emerald green together?
“Of course, the safe way is to wear from head to toe a strong colour that makes you happy (as seen at Blumarine above left). Colour blocking (at Gucci right) is another way to reinvent old pieces with different combinations. And don’t forget about the clever use of colourful accessories!”
The bold use of colour in make-up (Prada below) must also not be overlooked…
2. LACE EMBRACE
“Lace is timeless…it’s retro, vintage, modern and sensual. One can wear it full body or filter it according to your style,” says Terrence. “It is important to play with colour and texture to create the desired effect that you want.”
3. PRINTS REVOLUTION
“Prints tell a story…It is a clever way to add spice to a simple silhouette. One can experiment and even wear print on print for fun.
“One of the other trends for summer is the maxi dress (above right) which celebrates womanhood in a romantic and elegant way.”
4. SEEING THE LIGHT
“Cleansing white is going to be a big trend this summer. Wearing white from head to toe is actually slimming. Play around with different textures and the sensual contrast the colour create against one’s skin.
“Of course, one can still make use of minimal colour just to break the white…”
5. THE YSL STANDARD
“Late iconic French designer Yves Saint Laurent’s designs from the ’70s are being revisited in Europe,” according to Terrence.
“That encompasses the romance of it all: fluid, belted and sumptuous. For the gypsy in each one of us…Remeber, every day we are characters in a story and we can dress that way!”
AND NOW FOR TERRENCE BRAY SPRING/SUMMER 2011…
Terrence’s 2011/12 collection titled ‘Cambodia in my Yard’ was shown for only the second time in South Africa on Monday evening at the Calyx show…quelle heureur!
For his absolutely fabulous collection, Terrence apparently drew his inspiration from his own garden as well as from old-school neon. The soft digital prints on natural fabrics were created as photographer Vaughn Trevvellyn captured plants in the garden. And believe it or not…Port Elizabeth’s own design duo sensation Silver Spoon did the prints for Terrence. The duo has recently won the Marie Claire Award for Young and Upcoming designers. Well done!
All the photos of Terrence’s creations were taken by photographer BRIAN WITBOOI…enjoy…
The Calyx Fashion Show raised funds for cancer support network Look Good, Feel Better.
Other designers that showed their collections were SILVER SPOON, AMANDA LAIRD CHERRY, COLLEEN EITZEN, SWAY, TART, RUTHANN, CHRISTOPHER STRONG, MAYA PRASS and KOTTIN & TWILL.
