Cannes red carpet: The devil wore Rajah

24 May

The Cannes Film Festival is a fantastical flurry of fashion frenzy and the 64th festival which ended at the weekend on the French Riviera, was of course no exception…

Cannes’s main drag – La Croisette – was a heady mix of sun, sea and celebrities donning St Tropez-inspired resortwear at day and red-carpet glamour at night.

Here follows some of my fashion favourites and faux-pas:

South African swimsuit model Candice Boucher made the tongues wag and eyes ogle with her tres tres revealing black Gavin Rajah creation at the screening of the Israeli movie Hearat Shulayim. Onse Candice who bared it all for Playboy last year, even made the UK’s Daily Mail the next morning with her daring dress.

Well, Candice certainly stole the spotlight from Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat (below right) who was planning to grab the eyeballs with her own black lace number. But instead of grabbing the attention, her dress seemed more bondage gear than sexy and Candice’s transparent number with lace flowers covering the vital bits, was the talk of the town.

And let us not forget: Revealing a lot of skin in front of the cameras at a high-profile event, can be what it takes for Candice to be catapulted onto the international platform…

Take Elizabeth Hurley with her skin-baring Versace safety-pin number at the Four Weddings and a Funeral premiere in 1994 as a case in example. Anyone feel the need to criticise?

Moving right along to actress Uma Thurman who not just sat on the Cannes jury panel this year, but truly dazzled in spring/summer 2011’s must-have: The Great White number.

Uma started the festival’s opening day in a fresh breeze of lacy Dolce & Gabbana before slipping into a Versace gown for the evening.

The strapless feather gown she wowed the crowd with later at the Opening Ceremony is from the Versace Fall 2011 ready-to-wear collection. She finished off the pretty picture with a thigh-high split and Jimmy Choo “Miles” nude strappy sandals. A chic updo and emerald jewels completed her look.

And what would Cannes be without Brangelina strutting the red carpet?

Angelina Jolie-Pitt glided down the red carpet at the premiere of husband Brad Pitt’s latest film – Tree of Life – wearing a gorgeous Atelier Versace rich chocolate strapless silk gown with a long train.

As for Brad showing off an interesting new direction in his wardrobe and retro-style sunnies at Cannes…

Brad stepped out at the Tree of Life photocall with co-star Jessica Chastain dressed from head-to-toe in Tom Ford . The tortoiseshell framed sunglasses with honey-tinted lenses is also one of iconic American designer Tom Ford’s latest creations. The rectangular “Singleman” style was inspired by Colin Firth’s character, George Falconer, in the film A Single Man, which was Tom Ford’s directorial debut in 2009. But whether it works for Brad, I am still in two minds about…one of them spells Miami Vice…mmmmm

For the Tree of Life premiere he did it all in Tom Ford again with a  shawl-lapel tuxedo and dressier black acetate frames with transparent lenses.

Another Hollywood icon who is by now known for his individual style, Johnny Depp, also jumped on the edgy sunglasses bandwagon at Cannes.

For the Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides premiere, the actor arrived in black-and-white formal attire with retro-looking dark transparent shades by Moscot. Depp’s “Lemtosh” style by the NYC-based eyewear company is a throwback to a frame that was popular in the 1930s and 1940s.

Depp’s radiant co-star Penelope Cruz was an absolute dream in her romantic yet sexy lavender Marchesa dress from the designer’s Fall collection…

Actress/singer Milla Jovovich invoked old-fashioned Hollywood glamour at the screening of La Conquete in a beaded white and red-collared Prada gown with plunging neck- and backline.

Israeli model Bar Refaeli did definitely not let her recent break-up with actor Leonardo diCaprio get in the way of her red-carpet dazzle. For the premiere of The Beaver she stepped out in a breathtaking navy blue Roberto Cavalli gown and Chopard jewelery…

And lastly…a bit of “comic relief” from Fashion For Relief 2011 at Cannes organised by supermodel Naomi Campbell to raise funds for post-earthquake and tsunami relief efforts in Japan…even models come tumbling down every now and again…Ouch
